Keeping gutters clear, timber in top form and fences in good condition are routine but vital jobs to protect your property and its boundaries. A quick reminder list for each will help.

Unblocking Gutters and Downpipes

  • Your gutters will need to be checked every so often to make sure they aren't blocked, particularly after high winds, when leaves and other debris may get deposited there

  • If gutters are clogged, this can slow drainage from the roof and cause overflows or blocked downpipes, so look out for areas which seem particularly wet

  • Don't lean ladders against gutters when you clear them, as this could cause damage

  • Don't take any risks when working at height.  We suggest that you hire a professional to clean your gutters, unless you've got the correct equipment and can do it safely yourself

Caring for Timber

  • Any external timber, e.g., decking, windows, sheds and doors, needs to be painted or stained treated with a suitable wood care stain at least once a year to keep it in good condition

  • You may have to do this more frequently if you live near the sea or if the weather has been particularly harsh on the woodwork

Maintaining your Fences

  • Repairs can be made to wooden fences if they are thoroughly dry.  Apply waterproof glue according to manufacturer’s instructions and clamp the broken pieces together

  • Protect your fence from the elements, either with appropriate wood preservers or utilising decking oil, which can help make your fence water resistant

  • Fence stain helps to seal the wood – but in a new property the colour may be restricted by a covenant or lease, so check before you start work
